June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! This is a purrfect time to talk about shelter kitties. There are far too many sweet, lovable cats in shelters, who want nothing more than laps to curl up on and sunbeams to look smug in. A local Kerrville, TX vet discusses adopting a shelter cat below.
There are many reasons to get your feline buddy from a shelter. First and foremost, you may very well be saving Fluffy’s life by rescuing her. You also have a chance to pick your new pet from a lineup of adorable faces. Take your time with the decision, though. Don’t overlook that sweet, shy pet that was rescued, or the older cat that no one wants! Sometimes these overlooked pets make the most loving companions. You’ll also be helping other kitties, both by freeing up space and providing the shelter with some much-needed funds.
Before bringing your new feline buddy home, you’ll need to make a run to the store. Fluffy will need some basic kitty necessities, such as bowls, food, toys, treats, and a litterbox and litter. Your furball should also have a few pieces of ‘purrniture’ such as catnip, a scratching post, some beds, and perhaps a cat tower. It’s probably safe to say that your fuzzy pal will also appreciate a few cardboard boxes, or a paper bag to play in.
Changes can be very stressful for kitties. Fluffy may very well spend most of her first day in her new home hiding. That’s fine! Talk to her, and try to coax her to come to you, but don’t force attention on her. It’s important to let her approach you when she’s ready for snuggles. If you have other pets, ask your vet for tips on introducing them.
Keep in mind that our feline pals all have their own purrsonalities. Some are just naturally more outgoing than others. Fluffy may jump right into your lap for cuddles on day one. Or, she may just be more aloof, and prefer to be admired from a distance. Just let your furball be herself. Chances are, she’ll soon have you wrapped around her paw!
