Arthritis In Dogs
February 1, 2023

Is your canine buddy having a hard time getting up or down? Does Fido struggle with getting on and off the bed or couch? If so, your pooch may have arthritis. There are several types of canine arthritis, but the most common is osteoarthritis. This painful condition affects as many as one out of five dogs that are over the age of one, and as many as 80 percent of pooches that are eight or older. A local Kerrville TX vet offers some information on canine arthritis in this article.

Basics

Osteoarthritis works very much the same in pets as it does in people. It’s usually brought on by gradual wearing of the soft tissues connecting Fido’s bones and joints, but it can also be triggered by infections or certain diseases. Although any pup can develop arthritis, some are more prone to developing this condition than others. Risk factors include obesity, injuries, poor nutrition. Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, also increase the chances.

Symptoms

Keep an eye out for warning signs. As mentioned above, difficulty getting up or down is a big one. Limping is another red flag. Fido may also have trouble going up or down stairs. He may lose interest in play, or shy away from having his sore joints touched. Some arthritic pups will act uncharacteristically grumpy and/or aggressive. Others may seem sad or withdrawn.

Treatment

Arthritis can’t be treated, but there are ways to relieve your pet’s pain and improve his mobility and overall quality of life. These may range from medication to acupuncture to other options. If your furry best friend is overweight, then getting those excess pounds off of him will also help. The exact course of treatment of course depends on the type and severity of Fido’s condition. Your vet can go over the specific options with you once a diagnosis has been made.

Prevention

That old saying about an ounce of prevention being worth a pound of cure certainly applies to our canine companions. Keeping Fido active and at a healthy weight will go a long way towards keeping him healthy. A good diet, of course, is also crucial. Your pup may also benefit from certain supplements, such as glucosamine. Ask your vet for specific advice.
