Pet Fire Safety
July 15, 2023

Did you know that pets start as many as 1000 house fires every year? Fido and Fluffy may not be playing with matches, but they can still accidentally cause blazes. As the saying says, an ounce of prevention is worth several pounds of cure. This is one area where taking a few safety measures can make all the difference. A Kerrville TX vet offers some helpful tips on this topic below.

Window Stickers

Get some fire safety window stickers, and include your animal companions in the head count. Say how many pets you have, what kind of animals they are, and where they may be hiding. Many first responders try to save pets if they can. However, they need to know what they’re looking for.

Heat/Flames

Candles are one of the biggest causes of house fires. Always burn candles in high spots, well out of paws’ reach. For those with big dogs, gas stoves can be an issue, as larger pups can turn the gas on accidentally. Use child-safe knobs.

Emergency Kit

We recommend having an all-purpose emergency/evacuation kit ready. Make one for your furry friend as well. Pack a week’s worth of food, water, treats, and medicine; bedding; towels; dishes; toys; a leash and collar; a pet first-aid kit, and copies of your dog or cat’s registration and medical records. Fluffy will need a litterbox and litter, while Fido’s kit should include a leash and collar. Store the kit near your pet’s travel carrier for easy access.

Pocket Pets

Chewing is another potential danger. You don’t want your four-legged pal nibbling on live wires! This doesn’t just apply to rabbits and pocket pets; Fido and Fluffy also have been known to gnaw on things. Use protective casings and/or taste deterrent to protect wires you can’t move out of the way.

Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors can be life-savers, but they only work if they’re set up and have battery power. Remember to check yours regularly, and replace the batteries as needed. (Tip: put a reminder on your phone for this.)

Alarm System

Another thing you can do is get a monitored alarm system. It is another expense, which may be off putting to some. However, the added peace of mind and protection are well worth the cost.
