Are you hosting this year’s Thanksgiving gathering? If so, you may want to take some time to make sure that your canine buddy looks his best on the big day. Guests will enjoy interacting with Fido much more if he’s clean and fresh-smelling. A Kerrville, TX vet offers some tips on doggy grooming below.

Brushing

While dogs vary a bit as far as how often they need to be bathed, most pups will benefit from being brushed at least once a week. Give Fido a few extra grooming sessions before the holiday. We recommend taking him outside to brush him. That way, the extra fur will just blow away.

Baths

Fido does seem to enjoy feeling clean and fresh. However, he’s not particularly enamored with the process that gets him there. Consider booking your pooch an appointment at the salon. We definitely recommend going to a groomer if your furry best buddy is a senior dog or large breed, or if he has any chronic pain. Groomers have stations that are easy for our canine pals to get on and off. This is going to be a much more comfortable option for your pup than being lifted or coaxed in and out of the tub. Plus, it’s easy for you!

Claws

Don’t forget to clip your furry pal’s nails! Overgrown nails are actually much more problematic than many people realize. They can snag on things, and make it hard for dogs to get decent traction. They’re also very uncomfortable. If you aren’t comfortable doing it yourself, ask your vet to demonstrate. You can also just book an appointment for Fido to get a pawdicure.

Face

Does your four-legged friend get tear stains? You can use a warm, wet washcloth or cotton pad to gently clean these. You can also find products specifically made for removing tear stains. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Smell

We love our canine companions, but they can get a bit stinky. Brushing and bathing will only help get the fur that’s still on your dog. You’ll need to thoroughly dust and vacuum your place. Changing the air filters regularly is also a good idea. If you need to remove fur from your upholstery, use a damp sponge or a squeegee.
