Acupuncture For Pets
August 15, 2021

Many different products and practices have been gaining quite a bit of traction lately, both for people and pets. One particular treatment that we are happy to offer is acupuncture. A local Kerrville, TX vet discusses acupuncture for pets in this article.

History

Acupuncture isn’t new: it’s been around for thousands of years, and originated in China. The ancient practice is based on the principle of Chi , or energy, and the way it travels through the bodies. Very thin needles are inserted into the body at specific points, which–according to traditional beliefs–helps direct the flow of energy through the body, much like the way that wires and circuit boards channel the flow of electricity through a building. Western medicine uses the same tools—those ultra-thin needles—though it views the process a bit differently. The needles are inserted at specific nerve points. This triggers several reactions: the body releases its natural hormones, which reduce pain and help with healing. The muscles are also released, which improves circulation.

Benefits

Acupuncture has some very unique and wonderful benefits for pets. First and foremost, it is painless. Some pets even fall asleep! It also is very safe, and has no known side effects. Your pet will not need to be shaved or put under anesthesia. There is no recovery time needed (aside from an extra nap or two) and treatments can be repeated as often as necessary. Acupuncture is also very versatile, and can be used in conjunction with many other treatments. Of course, the biggest thing of all is simply the fact that it works! Many people notice a remarkable improvement in their furry friends.

Uses

Acupuncture can be used to treat a wide variety of issues in pets. Arthritis may be the most common one. This wonderful treatment has helped many of our four-legged companions regain mobility! It can also help pets with issues like intervertebral disc disease, tendonitis, degenerative joint disease, sprains and muscle spasms, and trauma recovery, to name just a few. We love seeing pets feel better, and regaining better mobility!

Tips

If you think that your furry best friend may benefit from acupuncture, ask your vet for more information. While every pet is different, it definitely never hurts to learn more!
