Halloween is coming up fast! This can be a dangerous holiday for pets, so you’ll want to take some steps to keep your animal friend safe. A Kerrville TX vet lists some Halloween pet care tips below.
Be Careful With Candy
Pets are very curious, and they love to inspect, play with, and taste test … everything. This can be very dangerous, particularly with Halloween candy. Many of those small treats are unsafe for pets! Some contain things that are toxic to Fido and Fluffy, such as chocolate or raisins, while others present choking hazards.
Decorate Wisely
Keep your furry pal in mind as you decorate for the autumn holiday. Anything with trailing strings or threads, such as garlands and fake spiderwebs, should be kept out of paws’ reach. Small or sharp objects are also unsafe, as are plastic bags and wrappers and anything that contains chemicals or batteries.
Monitor Pets Closely
This is one of the most dangerous times of year for our feline friends. Black cats are especially at risk. Because of the old superstitions associating black cats with witchcraft, they’re very vulnerable to being stolen and, unfortunately, harmed. There’s also the fact that pets are harder to see at night, which increases their risk of being hit by cars. Keep your furball inside!
Be Cautious On Walks
The roads get quite busy at this time of year. It’s also getting dark earlier. If you have a dog, keep him on a close leash when walking him. Don’t let him get ahead of you crossing intersections or driveways. Also, don’t let him eat things he comes across on the ground. You’ll also want to use reflective gear after dark.
Use Fire Carefully
Scented candles, fireplaces, and firepits can all give your home that super cozy autumn vibe. Just take care not to let your four-legged friend get near any open flames. Use grates before pits and fireplaces.
Guests
Do you expect a lot of trick-or-treaters? Are you hosting events? Strangers can be a source of stress for pets. Some animals can get very overwhelmed by a lot of commotion! Costumes can also be scary and confusing to Fido and Fluffy. If your furry buddy is anxious, make sure they have a quiet spot to retreat to.
