Summer is on the way! This time of year can be brutally hot here in Texas, so it’s no surprise that so many people love to cool off by going to the pool. Our canine pals often like to accompany us; after all, Fido wants to go everywhere with his humans. You will need to take a few precautions to keep your cute pet safe and sound poolside, though. A Kerrville, TX vet offers some information on this below.
Swim Lessons
While some dogs take to water like furry, barking ducks, others need to learn how to swim. If Fido falls into the latter category, take time to teach him. Don’t just toss him in and expect him to figure it out: that may terrify him, and leave him with a lifelong fear of water. Just support him gently as he’s learning.
Exit Here
Make sure Fido knows how to get out of the pool! Otherwise, he could be in serious danger if he falls in while you aren’t around. Take some time with this, and test your canine buddy, to make sure he really remembers.
Safety
Pool safety is one of those things you really just can’t be too careful with. Use the same protocols to keep Fido safe near the pool that you would with a toddler. Keep a close eye on your furry friend at all times! We also recommend keeping pools gated or fenced off when not in use.
Covers
If you use a pool cover, keep Fido away from the pool when it’s on. Dogs sometimes mistake these coverings for solid surfaces. This is very dangerous, as your pooch could fall in if he were to try walking on it.
Water
Don’t let Fido drink from the pool! Make sure he always has fresh, cool water to drink from.
Paw Care
Dogs’ paws get very delicate when they’re wet, just as our skin does. This means Fido is especially at risk of getting blisters after going swimming. Keep your pup on the grass when he gets out of the pool, and don’t let him run around on hot tar or rocks.
Lifejacket
Fido should definitely have a doggy lifejacket. Even if he swims well, he may need one for boating. Keep one on hand.
