Are you considering adopting a stray? Maybe a cute kitty has been hanging around your porch lately. Or, maybe someone you know is trying to help a homeless furball get adopted. Many of our feline patients are former strays. However, A local Kerrville, TX vet offers some tips on adopting Fluffy below.
Vet Trip
The first thing you’ll want to do is take Fluffy to the vet. Even if your new buddy seems healthy, she’ll need vaccines and parasite control. You’ll also want to have her checked for a microchip, just to make sure she isn’t being missed by a worried owner or family. If your feline pal hasn’t been fixed yet, that should be on the agenda as well.
Setup
Changing homes can be quite stressful for cats. Your best bet is to put Fluffy in a quiet spot at first. Give her food and water, bedding, a litterbox, and comfy toys. Some background noise, such as a radio or a small TV that is playing kitty videos, will soothe her. If she seems super nervous, ask your vet about pet-calming pheromones.
Trust
Stray cats vary widely as far as temperament. Some furballs will immediately sprawl out in the middle of the floor and make themselves at home. If you’ve been feeding your new pal for a while, she may already have decided that you’re a friend. However, some kitties will need time to feel safe. Don’t force attention on Fluffy. You also don’t want to pick her up or hold her against her will …. unless of course you’re trying to get her into a carrier. The biggest part of gaining a kitty’s trust is to always let her come to you. Toys, treats, catnip, and TLC will all help you win your furry buddy over.
Purr Activation
It may take time for Fluffy to realize that she’s now a pet. We strongly recommend keeping her indoors. Make your home as fun and interesting for your furry friend as possible. Offer lots of comfy beds, a good window seat, and a scratching post. A catio is also a great option, as it will let your little buddy safely enjoy sunshine and fresh air. In time, Fluffy may lose all desire to go outdoors.
