Today is Mayday for Mutts! Quite a few of our canine patients are mutts, also called mixes and mongrels. While we love pups of all breeds, mutts have a special place in our hearts. Unique Dogs

One reason that mutts are so charming is that they often end up as a sort of mix-and-match of traits from different breeds. Think of this as a doggy version of Mr. Potato Head. Sometimes those unique features only make it easier to fall for Fido’s adorable face. There’s a lot to be said for having a one-of-a-kind pet!

Better Health

Purebred dogs can be wonderful, but one of the downsides to having them is the fact that they often have a high potential for health risks. Because purebreds come from a much smaller gene pool, they are prone to developing certain health issues. These vary from breed to breed. German Shepherds, for instance, are prone to hip dysplasia. Mutts often tend to be healthier.

Budget Friendly

Purebreds can be quite expensive. Some puppies can cost thousands. One of the most expensive puppies on record was a Tibetan mastiff that sold for nearly 2 million. That’s of course an extreme case, but it is safe to say that mutts are cheaper. Many of them are adopted from shelters, which is definitely easy on the wallet.

They’re Adorable

While every dog is different, mutts often end up with wonderful dispositions. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and colors. No matter what you are looking for, you’re bound to find a pup that melts your heart!

They’re Easy To Find

It can be challenging to try and find a dog of a specific breed. In some cases, you may end up on a waiting list for months or even years. There’s no shortage of mutts, however. Even if you are interested in a specific breed, you can likely find a pup that is a mix of that breed.

Tail Wags
