Senior Dog Care Tips
March 15, 2021

Dogs are spec ial for many reasons, but one of the best things about them is the fact that they really do get better with age. Puppies are of course absolutely adorable, but there’s also a lot to be said for having a pet that has lost interest in chewing shoes or chasing the cat around, and just wants to be petted and loved. A Kerrville, TX vet discusses senior dog care below.

Exercise

Fido won’t be as frisky or playful as he once was, but he’ll still need to stay active. Daily walks are typically the gold standard here. Your furry pal may be tired out after a short stroll, so keep a close eye out for signs of fatigue.

Veterinary Care

Your pooch will need to see his doctor a bit more often. Just like people, senior dogs have elevated risks of developing some very serious health conditions. You’ll also want to get updated advice on Fido’s diet and care needs as he grows older.

Comfort

Your canine buddy may need a bit more help just doing doggy things as he ages. Pet ramps or stairs will help him get in and out of the car and (if he’s allowed) on and off beds and couches. Elevated dishes will also help your furry friend eat without straining his back or legs. Comfy beds are also a must. Invest in a good orthopedic pet bed. It’s important for Fido to be able to sleep comfortably!

Food

Your four-legged friend will never outgrow his love of treats. Indulge him, but don’t go overboard. If you overfeed your pup, he’ll likely become obese. This will aggravate any bone/joint condition he may have, such as arthritis, and will also make it harder for him to stay active.

Grooming

Don’t forget about Fido’s beauty needs! Brush your furry buddy regularly to get rid of any dust or dead fur in his coat. This will help keep your pooch much more comfortable. Dental care and nail trims are also important.

Lov e

Finally, just pay plenty of attention to your canine pal. Treasure this special time with your beloved pet, and don’t ignore those adorable requests for ear scritches or belly rubs. Senior dog tail wags are extra special!
