Holiday Pet Grooming Tips
December 15, 2022

Happy Holidays! Many of our furry patients will be posing for family photos over the next few weeks. You want Fido and Fluffy to look their best for guests and pictures. We can help! A Kerrville, TX veterinarian offers some seasonal grooming tips in this article.

Book Appointments Early

If you take your furry friend to a groomer, you’ll want to make that appointment well in advance. It’s not a bad idea to schedule your follow up as well. Another tip? Make sure that you’ve booked enough time for everything you want. This is a busy time of year for many businesses, including groomers. There may not be enough wiggle room in the schedule to accommodate last-minute add-ons.

Brush, Brush, Brush

As far as maintenance goes, brushing Fido and Fluffy regularly is the most important thing you can do to keep their coats looking soft and clean. This will also reduce the amount of fur you have in your home, as you’ll be capturing it with a brush before it ends up on your Christmas tree skirt. If your dog or cat has very thick fur, a curly coat, or a wiry coat, you may need a special brush. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Skip Strong Perfumes

While many groomers now use unscented shampoos, this may be something you may need to request, especially if you’re going to a new place. Harsh perfumes can be too much for many people. And, given that Fido’s nose is between 10,000 to 100,000 times more sensitive than the average human’s, it’s probably safe to say that strong scents aren’t very pleasant for him, either.

Take All The Photos

We never get tired of seeing seasonal photos of our adorable patients. Have some fun with this! If you can get Fluffy to (briefly) wear little reindeer antlers, or put an elf cape on Fido, go for it. Just stick with things made specifically for pets: these will be much safer.

Skip Short Cuts

Your canine buddy may be comfy with a lion cut in summer, but at this time of year he needs that fur to keep him warm … even here in Texas. Let Fido’s haircut grow out until spring.
