Holidays With Puppies
December 1, 2022

Has a puppy just joined your household? Congratulations! You’ll have to keep a close eye on little Fido over the next few weeks, however. The holidays can be dangerous for curious little pups! A Kerrville TX vet offers some tips on holiday puppy safety in this article.

Petproofing

Petproofing is important at any time of year, and it’s definitely something you’ll want to incorporate into your decorations. Anything small or sharp is a hazard. That includes pine needles, ornaments and ornament hooks, lights, tinsel, ribbons, and manger pieces. We recommend putting a puppy gate around your tree. This will keep your furry pal from eating the presents and, if you have a real tree, from drinking the water. Seasonal plants are also a concern, as are candles. Keep these out of paws’ reach! Ask your vet for more puppyproofing tips. It’s also important to form good habits. Make sure little Fido has plenty of suitable chew toys!

Socialization

Socialization is very important for baby dogs. The holidays can be great for this! Have friends and family members pet and play with the little guy. Just keep in mind that too much commotion can be overwhelming. If little Fido seems frightened, let him relax for a while.

Gifts

Don’t forget to get your canine pal a cute stocking! Some ‘pawesome’ gift options include toys, treats, beds, and grooming supplies. Want to give a gift that keeps on giving? Subscription boxes and professional training fit the bill!

Food

Your four-legged friend will definitely be interested in those scrumptious feasts. Don’t reward him for begging! It’s much easier to teach good petiquette now than to break bad habits later. Make sure little Fido doesn’t eat anything dangerous, such as meat on the bone, grapes and raisins, onions, avocado, nuts, alcohol, or chocolate. Ask your vet for more information.

Training

Holidays or no, proper training is crucial at this stage of your furry buddy’s life. December can get hectic, so you may need to sneak short sessions in. That’s fine! Try to work with little Fido for 10-15 minutes a day.

Pictures

That adorable toddler phase passes quickly. Little Fido will be all grown up before you know it! Make sure to take plenty of photos of your canine buddy!
