Allergies In Dogs
August 16, 2022
Did you know that dogs can get allergies, just like people can? Fido can develop allergies at any point in his life, and to almost anything. Allergies work pretty much the same way in dogs as they do with us. In a nutshell, after being exposed to certain substances or proteins, Fido’s immune system may decide that something is unfriendly. It will then launch an assault, which can cause unpleasant—and sometimes dangerous—reactions. A Kerrville, TX veterinarian discusses doggy allergies below.

Common Culprits

Man’s Best Friend is often allergic to the same types of things as people are. Some common culprits include plants, leaves, trees, dust, mold, and pollen. Fido can also be allergic to certain foods, such as chicken. Pups can also react to ingredients in their beds, furniture, or carpet, or to strong fumes, such as perfumes or cigarette smoke.

Symptoms

The symptoms of allergies will vary, depending on the type of allergy that Fido has. A few common ones include runny eyes, sneezing, wheezing, snoring, and burping. Some dogs develop skin irritation, flatulence, and/or tummy troubles. Allergies can also be the culprit behind stubborn ear or skin infections that clear up with medication, but return after treatment stops. Occasionally, allergies can cause more serious reactions, such as seizures, coma, or even death, though luckily that is rare.

Home Care

There are also ways to keep your furry buddy more comfortable at home. Regularly vacuuming, dusting, and changing your air filter can all be very helpful. If your pooch is allergic to grass or pollen, get into the habit of wiping his paws and belly down with a washcloth after his walks. You may also want to switch to hypoallergenic doggy shampoo and detergent for Fido’s bedding and toys.

Treatment

Allergies can’t be cured, but there are things you can do to keep your pooch comfortable. If your canine companion has any of the symptoms mentioned above, contact us ASAP. The first order of business will entail finding out exactly what Fido is reacting to. If food allergies are suspected, this may take some time: you’d need to put your furry buddy on a very bland diet until symptoms stop, and then reintroduce items one by one, until you pinpoint what is disagreeing with him.
