Summer Hazards For Cats
June 15, 2022
Summer is officially upon us. This can be a dangerous time of year for cats! A Kerrville TX vet lists some things that could endanger your kitty in summer below.

Parasites

Staying up to date on your furry friend’s parasite control products is very important! Fleas, ticks, and heartworms all pose a serious threat to your cute little pet! As we all know, some of our feline pals like to hunt—and eat—mice, birds, and other small critters, which increases their risk of contracting parasites or diseases. Keep your adorable serial killer indoors!

Heat

Cats can get in trouble very quickly if they get too hot! Fluffy can only sweat through her cute ‘toe beans’ and she can’t really cool herself down by panting, as Fido does. Make sure your feline pal always has access to fresh water and cool, shaded areas. (Note: brachycephalic cats, such as Persians, are especially at risk of overheating, as are senior pets, kittens, and furballs with medical problems.)

Critters

At this time of year, all sorts of wild critters are going to be out and about. Texas is home to quite a few dangerous animals, including poisonous toads and spiders, alligators, insects, and, of course, several types of rattlesnakes. This is another reason to keep your cat indoors.

Plants

Kitties are carnivores, but they do like to nibble on plants and greenery. This can be dangerous, as many plants are toxic to Fluffy. Lilies, for example, are very deadly to cats. You can find a full list of safe and unsafe plants online at the ASPCA website here.

Chemicals

Pesticides, lawn/garden products, fertilizer, torch oil, lighter fluid … there’s almost no end to the list of toxic chemicals that are dangerous to cats. Fluffy only needs to walk through a recently-treated spot and lick her paws to ingest them! Stick with pet-safe, eco friendly products.

Fur

Fluffy is pretty diligent about keeping her fur clean. However, she can still use some help. Brush your furry pal regularly to remove dead fur and dander from her coat.

Hot Rooms

Cats have a tendency to follow their humans around. Unfortunately for Fluffy, that puts them at risk of getting locked into hot spots, like sheds. Keep an eye on your little shadow! As your Kerrville TX animal clinic, we are dedicated to offering top-notch care. Please feel free to call us anytime!
